Born in Suriname, in South America, but was brought up in the Netherlands, Jayshree started her Career as a Retail Manager in Fashion Retailers, MAX, Netherlands.
In the earlier days of her career, her aim was nowhere in becoming a Makeup Artist, but was very interested her shaping her career as a Fashion Stylist. I would like to mention here that Jayshree’s mother was running a successful career as a Makeup Artist, and young Jayshree used to assist her mother whenever needed. It was during this time that her mother took very ill and couldn’t work, and it was then that Jayshree had to take over the running of her mother’s business. With her experience of working in the Beauty Industry, and having to suddenly take over the reigns of her mother’s business, she started taking an ardent interest in the Makeup Industry, thus a very successfully makeup Artist, Jayshree Lachman was born.
I had the good fortune of meeting with her and she obliged me with an interview, below is few excerpts from the conversation I had with Jayshree Lachman.
How did you get into the Beauty line?
As a young girl, my interest was to become a Fashion Stylist, but when my mother who was a successful Makeup Artist took ill and was unable to handle her business due to ill health took a back seat, I had to step in and take over the reign. It was then that I realised that I started liking what I was doing and since then there has been no looking back.
What are the biggest challenges a makeup Artist has to face?
The first and biggest challenge is COMPETITION, the Makeup Industry has so much of Competition, you have to be the best in whatever you do, and you should be there for your customers at any time. You have to know what exactly your Customer needs and put yourself in the shoes of your customer.
What is the difference between applying makeup for a TV event and applying makeup for a live appearance party?
In the case of TV event the makeup used should be a Light Coverage because of the lighting. Whereas in the case of a Live Event the makeup should be of a heavy coverage, because shadows play a major part.
Can you mention a few experiences as a Makeup Artist?
One life changing experience as a Makeup Artist, would have to be this young Cancer patient who came to me, saying she wanted me to teach her how to use makeup as the disease had make her look older than her age, and she also did mention that she didn’t have the money to pay me. But I did help her and showed her how to apply makeup and made her look pretty. I felt so happy doing this for that girl, that this has been a life changing experience for me in my career as a Makeup Artist.
Everybody has different views when it comes to the idea of applying makeup, but what does applying makeup mean to you?
Makeup for me is a Passion, it is a talent that I have and lastly it is my first Love.
What advice do you have for the young aspiring Makeup Artists out there?
My advice to Young Aspiring Makeup Artists would be LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMER, BE OPEN TO THEM, LISTEN TO THEM WITH YOUR HEART AND REMEMBER YOU ARE A DOCTOR TO A PATIENT.
Lastly, how are you going to keep yourself busy in the following days?
