Fifth forum on the Development of Tibet, China 2016 held in plush Intercontinental Hotel in Lhasa. The two-day forum, with the theme “New Phase of Tibet’s Development: Innovative, Coordinated, Green, Open and Shared Development”, was jointly organized by China’s State Council Information Office and the Tibet regional government. It is the second of its kind held in Tibet, China, since 2014. The forum started way back in 2007 which was held at Vienna (The capital of Austria ) in 2007, followed with in 2009 in Rome (The capital of Italy), 2011 in Athens (The capital of modern Greece ), 2014 in Lhasa Tibet and latest 2016 again in Lhasa Tibet.
The forum was officially inaugurated by Liu Qibao, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee by delivering inaugural speech with round of applause. More than 130 scholars, officials and correspondents from more than 30 countries and regions were in attendance at the 2016 Forum, including me.
All participants visited various destinations before commencement of forum to get firsthand understanding about various initiatives taken by central government and local bodies. The participants provided perceptive opinions and shared wisdom. The topics were innovative development of Tibet, green growth of Tibet, poverty alleviation and livelihood improvements in Tibet, as well as the region’s role in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
