Sonia Barbry French CG with Maha Governor Ch Vidysagar Rao (Photo PRO Raj Bhavan)


Her Excellency Sonia Barbry, newly appointed Consul General (CG) of France in Mumbai called on the Governor of Maharashtra His Excellency Ch. Vidyasagar Rao at picrusque Raj Bhavan in Mumbai on 13th March 2013. It was a courtesy call.


CG of France in Mumbai Sonia Barbry is a scholar.She is well versed numerous Indian culture like Bharatanatyam, Yoga, Dhrupad singing, Indian philosophy. She has a very good command on Hindi language and speaks fluent Hindi. CG Sonia Barbry said "France and India has very broad, intimate and honest relationship amongst two countries. The France is standing tall with India in fighting terrorism. France is supporting India in several areas, including strategic security, nuclear power generation and cooperation with France.



She added "There are more than 550 French companies are operational in Maharashtra state and doing wonderful work. These companies include Dassault, Sanofi and Jaitapur Nuclear Power Generating project to name a few.  Collectively these companies employ 3.6 lakh people. Besides above projects French companies also financially cooperating in the metro project of Nagpur and Pune".



It maybe noted that Sanofi S.A. is French multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Paris, France. As of 2013, it is world's fifth-largest by prescription sales. Whereas Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine, canard delta wing, multi role fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation.  


She also added "France is keen on to increase cooperation with India in the field of education. French President Emmanuel Macron has earmarked to increase number of around 10,000 Indian students to come to France for higher studies by year 2020. Mumbai's French Consulate last year alone issued around 17000 visa's of various categories to visit France".     


The Governor of Maharashtra Ch. Vidyasagar Rao suggested that France should increase cooperation with the Universities of Maharashtra and in particular, the Sanskrit University.
