BMC gears up to minimise the impact of Cyclone Tauktae

In view of the IMD’s warning about cyclone Tauktae, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that it is taking various precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has also directed the authorities in coastal districts of the state to remain alert and well-equipped to tackle the situation.

“In a prep meeting regarding Cyclone Tauktae, CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray instructed the District Administration, Divisional Commissioners, and District Collectors to be vigilant and well equipped in coastal areas,” said the CMO in a tweet.

The CM has also asked collectors of Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri & Sindhudurg to take all necessary precautions in terms of rescue equipment and manpower.

The BMC has also informed in a release that potentially dangerous tree branches are being cut, dewatering pumps are being stationed in low-lying areas, temporary shelters would be opened if required and rescue teams would be deployed on six main ‘Chowpatties’ (beaches).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said on Friday that the depression in the Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a “very severe cyclonic storm” on May 17 and cross the Gujarat coast a day later.
