Death toll rises to 6 in Mumbai lift collapse; building contractor, supervisor arrested

Six people have died after a lift crashed at the under-construction site of the Lalit Ambika builders on Saturday. The Mumbai Police have arrested the building contractor and supervisor in connection with the accident.

The death toll in the collapse of a construction lift in Mumbai’s Worli area rose to six. The police have arrested the building contractor and supervisor for allegedly flouting safety norms and risking the life of workers.

Five people were killed on Saturday after a lift crashed at the under-construction site of the Lalit Ambika builders. One person was critically injured in the incident. According to the police, the injured person later succumbed to his injuries, taking the death toll to six.

Following the incident, NM Joshi Marg police station registered an FIR under section 304 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The cops have arrested contractor and supervisor of the building for negligence and risking life of workers. Mumbai police officials said that if further investigation reveals that there was negligence on part of some other persons, they too will be arrested.

HOW DID THE ACCIDENT HAPPEN?

According to officials, some labourers got into the construction lift from above the ninth floor when it crashed, killing four of them on the spot. One labourer, who later died, was initially stuck inside the lift, while another person was critically injured. The injured person later succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray had reached the spot after the incident. He claimed that the lift crashed due to overloading, but assured that proper investigation will be conducted into the matter.

Aaditya Thackeray said, “Due to overloading, the incident took place. This incident will be investigated.”
