Maharashtra Governor Inaugurates Merchant Navy Week Celebrations

DG Shipping Shyam Jagannathan affixes a maritime day badge on the apparel of the Governor.

Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais inaugurated the 61st National Maritime Day and Merchant Navy Week – 2024 at Raj Bhavan Mumbai on Sat (30 Mar). Director General of Shipping Shyam Jagannathan affixed the maritime day badge on the apparel of the Governor.

The Merchant Navy Week was organised by the Shipping Corporation of India and the National Maritime Day Celebrations Committee.  The theme of the Merchant Navy Week is ‘Sustainable Shipping: Challenges and Opportunities’.

Governor Ramesh Bais emphasised that India is on track to become the third largest economy today. Due to the country’s strong democracy, many countries are eager to increase trade relations with India. In this regard, the Governor expressed hope that the maritime trade sector will continue to contribute. The governor said that more efforts should be made to promote passenger traffic by sea.

Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of Shipping informed that the number of women in the total workforce in the maritime trade sector is increasing significantly and today 4563 women seafarers are working in this sector. He said that efforts are being made to increase the safety of women sailors in order to attract more women to this field. He said that the theme of the National Maritime Week is ‘Sustainable Shipping: Challenges and Opportunities’.

Chairman of Shipping Corporation of India Capt B K Tyagi, Chairman of National Maritime Day Celebrations Committee Atul Ubale, Deputy DG Dr Pandurang Raut, Ship Surveyor Aniruddha Chaki, Nautical Surveyor Capt Manish Kumar, Shipping Master Mukul Datta and representatives of various shipping organisations were present.
