In a remarkable display of solidarity and determination, a group of individuals from Tamil Nadu has embarked on a journey of political and cultural transformation by embracing Sikhism. Inspired by the resolute spirit of the Delhi farmers’ agitation of 2021, these individuals, hailing from diverse backgrounds and faiths, have found common ground in the pursuit of social justice and equality.

The Bahujan Dravida Party (BDP), founded by Jeevan Singh, a native of Thoothukudi, has taken center stage in this movement for change. With a mission to establish a casteless society and promote universal brotherhood, the party has fielded seven candidates in Tamil Nadu for the Lok Sabha elections. What sets these candidates apart is not just their political affiliation but their shared commitment to the principles of Sikhism.

For Selva Singh, a 27-year-old law student from Thoothukudi, the journey began with his participation in the farmers’ agitation alongside 100 parai musicians. Moved by the unity and determination of the Sikh farmers, Selva Singh embraced Sikhism, finding solace in its principles of equality and solidarity.

Similarly, Asiriyar Shanmugasundaram Singh, a Dalit from Thoothukudi, saw Sikhism as a means to escape the shackles of the caste system that had plagued him for so long. His decision to embrace Sikhism was fueled by a desire for empowerment and liberation from social injustice.

The story repeats itself with Palanichamy alias Korkai Palani Singh, a photo designer from Madurai, who was drawn to Sikhism after witnessing the leadership and egalitarian principles of the Sikh farmers during the BDP’s rally. Even Rajan Singh, a retired conductor from MTC, and his wife Seetha Kaur, both from Scheduled Caste communities, found renewal and liberation in Sikhism, shedding superstitious beliefs and embracing a path of social reform.

What unites these individuals is not just their newfound faith but their unwavering commitment to social change. They envision a society free from discrimination and injustice, where every individual is treated with dignity and respect. Through their participation in politics and advocacy for the marginalized, they seek to usher in a new era of progress and enlightenment in Tamil Nadu.

As they embark on their political journey under the banner of the BDP, these seven candidates represent the hopes and aspirations of a generation striving for a better tomorrow. Their story is not just one of personal transformation but a testament to the power of collective action and the enduring spirit of humanity. In embracing Sikhism, they have found not just a religion but a path towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
