Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, emphasized the importance of managing and resolving differences between India and China effectively during his address at the Merchant Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Kolkata. Recognizing that disagreements are natural between neighboring nations, Xu highlighted the need for smooth cooperation across diverse sectors, including politics, business, education, and science.
Reflecting on the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping at the BRICS Summit in Russia on October 23, Xu called it a pivotal moment for India-China relations. He noted that the two leaders’ discussions resulted in significant understandings that would guide the future trajectory of bilateral ties. “This meeting has provided a roadmap for moving forward, enabling us to manage our differences while building on areas of mutual interest,” Xu remarked.
In light of the recent disengagement at Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh, Xu expressed optimism about future relations. “I am hopeful that our bilateral ties will progress smoothly, unimpeded by specific disagreements,” he said. The ambassador hinted at potential resumption of joint patrols in the disengaged areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), signaling a step towards restoring stability.
Xu also addressed the topic of trade, advocating for greater cooperation to strengthen India-China business ties. He mentioned ongoing discussions to resume direct flights between India and China, suspended due to the pandemic. “Direct flights would benefit both sides, allowing faster travel and reinforcing connections. I look forward to the day when I can fly directly back to Beijing as before,” he said.
During his first visit to Kolkata, Ambassador Xu extended Diwali greetings to the people of India, underscoring his hope for stronger, uninterrupted bilateral relations based on mutual respect and cooperation.
