Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan emphasized the need for a balanced approach between development and environmental conservation, stressing that while protecting the environment is crucial, we must avoid becoming “environmentally fanatic” when addressing the real challenges faced by society.

The Governor made these remarks during the inauguration of the Conference on ‘Lifestyle for Environment: Bharatiya Perspective on Sustainability,’ held at the National Stock Exchange Convention Centre in Mumbai on November 27. The event was organized by Govardhan Eco Village in collaboration with Kotak School of Sustainability, IGBC, NIT Warangal, and other key organizations.

Governor Radhakrishnan highlighted that Indian spirituality and festivals have long advocated sustainable practices. He pointed out that the reverence shown towards rivers, mountains, and trees is not just ritualistic but serves as a reminder of their vital role in sustaining life on Earth.

He further noted that Indian culture teaches the concept of being trustees of the planet, rather than its owners. “We are here not to own the Earth, but to nurture it and pass it on to future generations in its full richness,” he said. This concept of trusteeship, he added, aligns seamlessly with the principles of sustainability and forms the foundation of a holistic development approach.

Prominent figures such as ‘Riverman of India’ Raman Kant and Gauranga Das, Director of Govardhan Eco Village, were also present at the event, further enriching the discussions on sustainability and environmental stewardship.
