The 12th Global Media Forum, hosted in South East China’s Fujian province, gathered 200 executives from media institutions across more than 60 countries at the Crowne Plaza Quanzhou Riverview Hotel. Sponsored by China Media Group (CMG), the event explored challenges posed by new technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), and the role of digital platforms in the evolving media landscape.
Delegates emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people communication and cultural exchanges to combat misinformation and promote truthful dissemination of information. Discussions also highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration among media in developing nations, ensuring stronger global representation for their voices.
Prensa Latina’s representative, Martin Hacthoun, introduced the “Voices of the Global South” portal, a collaborative initiative featuring articles from 150 media outlets that spotlight local realities. He urged participants to contribute to this project, while Prensa Latina President Luis Enrique González called for new cooperation agreements to amplify coverage of events in the Global South.
Adrian Wells, director of the European News Exchange, discussed AI’s dual potential: while it poses risks of disruption, its responsible use could transform media operations positively. Ian Phillips, Director of News and Media Division at the UN Department of Global Communications, highlighted the challenges posed by the misuse of social networks, which amplify fake news and hinder efforts to fight disinformation.
CMG Editor-in-Chief Shen Haixiong called for establishing a new media cooperation framework to strengthen the voice of the Global South. He stressed the importance of promoting peaceful development, mutual cooperation, and shared prosperity, reaffirming China’s commitment to working with global media partners to foster unity and modernization.
The forum concluded with a collective resolve to leverage technology responsibly and advance collaborative efforts to reshape global media narratives.
