Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the iconic filmmaker, director, and screenwriter Padma Bhushan Shri Shyam Benegal, whose contributions to Indian cinema have left an indelible mark on the nation’s cultural landscape.
In his condolence message, the Governor reflected on the immense influence of Benegal’s work, saying:
“Shri Shyam Benegal was a rare genius among filmmakers, whose pioneering contributions to parallel cinema left an everlasting imprint on the world of cinema. His cinematic masterpieces like Ankur, Nishant, and Manthan demonstrated his fearless approach in portraying social realities and tackling complex, often uncomfortable themes. These films not only shaped the course of Indian cinema but also brought to light critical social issues in a way that was both powerful and thought-provoking.
Beyond the silver screen, Shri Benegal’s visionary work also extended to television. He gave the nation the iconic series Bharat Ek Khoj, a monumental effort to reconnect viewers with India’s rich and diverse history. Through this remarkable series, he educated and inspired millions, bringing India’s cultural heritage into homes across the nation.
With his passing, India has lost an extraordinary filmmaker whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of storytellers, filmmakers, and artists. His work remains a beacon of creativity, courage, and commitment to social change. I offer my heartfelt tribute to Shri Shyam Benegal and extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers.”
