In a significant move further enhancing bilateral ties, India and Sri Lanka have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the rehabilitation of the Karainagar Boatyard in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. This initiative, supported by a grant of SLR 290 million from the Government of India, aims to modernize the boatyard, which operates under Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Fisheries.

The project will include civil works, machinery installation, and procurement of necessary equipment, contributing to improved livelihoods for local fishermen, job creation, and better-quality fisheries products. This collaboration underscores India’s continued commitment to strengthening its partnership with Sri Lanka, especially in the Northern Province.

The rehabilitation project will involve civil works, the installation of machinery, equipment, and services at the Karainagar Boatyard, which operates under Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Fisheries. Once completed, the upgraded boatyard will boost the local fishing industry, providing enhanced livelihood opportunities for fishermen, creating jobs, and improving the supply of quality fisheries products.

India’s development cooperation with Sri Lanka, valued at over USD 5 billion, has had a lasting impact on multiple sectors in Sri Lanka. Past initiatives in the Northern Province include the construction of over 41,000 houses, the establishment of a Cultural Centre in Jaffna, port improvements, and contributions to the agricultural and fishing communities with boats, nets, and equipment. The Karainagar Boatyard rehabilitation marks another milestone in the ongoing partnership between the two nations.
