The High Commission of India in Colombo, on the occasion of Duruthu Poya Day, inaugurated a Mobile Exhibition Series titled ‘Buddham Sharanam Gacchami’ at Maha Bodhi Agrasrawaka Viharaya in Maligakanda. The exhibition features a collection of paintings depicting key events from the life of Lord Buddha, as well as other essential Buddhist and spiritual themes, created by renowned figures in modern Indian Art. By blending contemporary artistry with traditional elements, the exhibition beautifully captures the timeless essence of Buddhist philosophy and its universal relevance.
Curated by the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, this exhibition made its debut in Sri Lanka during Vesak in May 2024. As part of an ongoing initiative, the High Commission plans to showcase the exhibition in various Buddhist temples across Sri Lanka on each Poya day throughout the year. In addition to the launch, the 12th edition of the mobile exhibition highlighting the rich Buddhist heritage of India was also displayed at the temple.
Meanwhile, the Indian Consulate in Hambantota organized a captivating photo exhibition titled “India through Sri Lankan Eyes” at Kasagala Raja Maha Viharaya to mark Duruthu Poya Day. The exhibition was inaugurated by Members of Parliament Hon. Nihal Galappaththi and Hon. Athula Welandagoda, along with Indian Consul General in Hambantota, Mr. Harvinder Singh, and in the presence of Ven. T. Indasiri Sumana Thero, Chief Prelate of the Kasagala Raja Maha Viharaya.
Both exhibitions were well-received by hundreds of devotees, who expressed their appreciation for the initiatives that help strengthen the cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka and foster a deeper understanding of Buddhist art and heritage.
