Mumbai car buyers will now need to provide proof of a designated parking spot to register their new vehicles. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently approved this requirement as part of a 100-day program aimed at tackling traffic congestion and air pollution across Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune.

As per the new rule, buyers must present a ‘Certified Parking Area’ (CPA) certificate issued by the BMC and approved by the transport department when registering a vehicle. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to curb the surge in private vehicle ownership and promote public transport.

Authorities plan to implement this rule in phases, with a focus on identifying parking spaces and gradually enforcing the policy, inspired by international models like those in London, Tokyo, and New York. The government is also considering congestion fees as part of this comprehensive traffic management plan.
