In a significant crackdown on gold smuggling, Mumbai Customs officials successfully intercepted a passenger arriving from Jeddah on April 4, 2025, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMI). The passenger, who arrived on Indigo Airlines flight no. 6E92, was apprehended after authorities discovered a stash of gold bars concealed within his luggage.
During routine screening on the day of duty, customs officers from the Mumbai Customs Zone III flagged a specific piece of baggage as suspicious. The inline team conducted a detailed inspection, and upon scanning the bag with the Baggage Scanning Machine (BSM), two electric irons showed unusual dark images, raising concerns.
Upon further examination, customs officials opened the irons and discovered a total of 16 pieces of 24-carat gold rods, weighing a combined 1200 grams. The gold, concealed inside the electrical appliances, had an estimated market value of Rs. 1.02 Crore.
The smuggling attempt was thwarted, and the passenger was promptly arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the arrested individual was operating alone or as part of a larger smuggling network.
This successful interception underscores the vigilance of Mumbai Customs in combating illegal activities and highlights the persistent threat of gold smuggling through major international airports. It serves as a reminder of the essential role customs officers play in safeguarding national security and the economy.
Mumbai Customs officials have reiterated their commitment to strengthening surveillance and detection efforts to curb such illegal activities, especially in light of the continued high demand for gold in the country. The arrested passenger has been remanded for further questioning as investigations continue.
This bust is part of a broader trend of increased gold seizures at Indian airports, signaling the ongoing battle against the smuggling of valuable commodities into the country.
