In a thoughtful gesture aimed at deepening ties between India and France, the Consulate General of France in Mumbai has partnered with Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya to unveil an updated French-language edition of the official guide to Mani Bhavan, the historic residence of Mahatma Gandhi in Mumbai. The launch ceremony was held on June 2 at Mani Bhavan, situated on Laburnum Road in South Mumbai.

On the occasion, French Consul General, His Excellency Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet officially handed over the French-language guide leaflets to the Dr. Usha Thakkar, President of Mani Bhavan. The initiative is designed to improve accessibility for French-speaking visitors and to promote Gandhi’s enduring legacy on a global stage, underscoring a mutual commitment to cultural understanding and historical awareness.

The collaboration is part of the broader efforts by the French diplomatic mission in India to foster cultural exchange and strengthen Indo-French relations. By providing resources in French, the Consulate seeks to engage the Francophone community and encourage a deeper understanding of India’s rich historical heritage. The French-language guide is expected to serve as a valuable resource for tourists and scholars interested in Gandhi’s life and philosophy.

Mani Bhavan holds significant historical importance as it was the focal point of Gandhi’s political activities in Mumbai from 1917 to 1934. The museum preserves the essence of Gandhi’s work and continues to attract visitors from around the world. The introduction of the French-language guide aligns with the museum’s mission to educate and inspire a global audience about Gandhi’s principles of non-violence and civil disobedience.

It is worth mentioning that the French Consulate in Bombay is one of the city’s oldest, reflecting the deep-rooted diplomatic ties between India and France. The two nations share a vibrant and multifaceted relationship spanning strategic, economic, cultural, and scientific domains. Their strategic partnership includes joint military exercises and major defense deals such as Rafale jets and Scorpene submarines. France is India’s 11th largest foreign investor, with interests in aviation, infrastructure, and renewable energy. Cultural relations flourish through initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and France’s goal to host 30,000 Indian students by 2030, promoting shared values and sustainable growth.
