Shanghai’s Smart Elderly Care Revolution

By Huang Xiaohui, People’s Daily

Shanghai is redefining elderly care by embracing intelligent technology across its senior living facilities. At the heart of this transformation is Jinyang Elderly Care Home in Pudong, where cutting-edge devices like smart mattresses and AI monitoring systems are saving lives and easing caregivers’ burdens.

One night, a smart mattress detected irregular blood pressure in a resident named Wang Mingxiang and instantly alerted nurse Zhao Zhanping. The quick response ensured he was hospitalized in time. Real-time systems throughout the home allow for constant monitoring, alerting both caregivers and family members of any health anomalies.

Shanghai, one of China’s most rapidly aging cities, has already constructed over 70 smart care homes with plans to exceed 100 by 2025. This initiative, led by the Civil Affairs Bureau, seeks to optimize care delivery while addressing workforce shortages.

Smart innovations now replace physical strain. Robotic devices assist with bathing and lifting, significantly reducing injury risks. Caregivers now spend more time on emotional support, improving the overall quality of service. Seniors like 95-year-old He Junmian appreciate the change, enjoying warmer, more attentive interactions.

Even the facility’s infrastructure reflects technological ingenuity. Lights double as sensors to detect falls in bathrooms, while visual intercoms make communication effortless. Other innovations include obstacle-avoidance wheelchairs, AI chess partners, and robotic servers.

Importantly, these tech upgrades haven’t increased fees—Jinyang charges around 5,000 yuan monthly, making smart care accessible to middle-income families.

However, administrators stress that technology must always serve people. Efficiency should never overshadow empathy. As Shanghai paves the way for future-ready eldercare, it blends innovation with humanity, building a model where residents not only live longer but live better.
