After a brief gap, the Chinese Consulate in Mumbai has a new leader at the helm. Qin Jie has been appointed as the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Mumbai, succeeding Kong Xianhua. With a strong background in academia and diplomacy, Qin is expected to bring fresh momentum to China’s engagement with western India.
Before assuming this post, Qin served as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in Denmark. His career reflects a unique blend of education, international relations and public service.
Born in 1975, Qin graduated in English Literature from Shanxi Normal University in 1998. He went on to earn two master’s degrees—one in English Curriculum & Teaching Methodology from Shanghai Normal University and another in English Language Teaching from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore—followed by a PhD in English Educology from Shanghai Normal University in 2016.
Qin’s early professional journey was rooted in academia. Between 1998 and 2017, he worked at Shanxi Normal University as lecturer, deputy dean and later dean of the Foreign Languages School. He also served as a visiting academic at East China Normal University in 2010.
In 2017, Qin transitioned into diplomacy, joining the Shanxi Foreign Affairs Office as deputy director-general. Since 2021, he has been associated with China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, steadily building experience in international diplomacy.
Qin Jie is married and has a son. His appointment in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, is seen as significant in enhancing diplomatic dialogue, economic cooperation and cultural exchange between China and western India, covering states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa.
