The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin is set to be the largest in the group’s history, reflecting its expanding global influence, according to Malik Ayub Sumbal, geopolitical analyst and commentator with CGTN.
Sumbal noted that this is the fifth time since the SCO’s formation in 2001 that China has assumed the presidency. Trade between China and SCO members has now crossed USD 512 billion, recording nearly 3% annual growth.
Describing the SCO as the world’s largest regional bloc, he said it represents 42% of the global population and nearly two-thirds of Eurasia’s, while contributing about 23% to global GDP. Originally focused on security, the organization has expanded into trade, energy, technology and cultural cooperation.
Energy remains central to the grouping, with member states holding an estimated 20–25% of global natural gas reserves, giving it a strong role in global energy markets.
At the Tianjin Summit, Sumbal highlighted unprecedented participation, with countries from the Middle East and Global South showing increasing interest in partnerships and investment.
Looking ahead, he said China is expected to advance innovation-driven growth during its presidency, with a focus on green energy, artificial intelligence and enhanced connectivity.
“The SCO’s growing profile shows that multilateral cooperation can be a genuine force for global stability and development,” Sumbal remarked.
