Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) is sharpening its focus on tier-two growth markets with the expansion of the Taj Mahal Hotel Lucknow, where 96 new luxury keys will be added through a 100,000 sq. ft. extension designed by CP Kukreja Architects.
The project signals more than just an architectural upgrade. For IHCL, it’s a strategic bet on Lucknow’s rise as a business and cultural destination — one that is increasingly drawing investment, real estate development, and premium consumer demand. Situated at Vipin Khand, with views of the Ambedkar Memorial Park and Gomti Nagar Riverfront, the property is being positioned as both a hospitality upgrade and a civic landmark.
“The expansion of Taj Mahal Lucknow is an architectural dialogue between past and present, rooted in the city’s heritage yet designed for tomorrow,” said Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President – Real Estate & Development, IHCL.
Designed to echo the Indo-classical proportions of the original property, the new wing will include a double-height colonnade, arched façades, and landscaped courtyards. Architect Dikshu C. Kukreja describes it as “a dialogue between tradition and modernity, ensuring the new blends seamlessly with the old, while offering its own identity of quiet luxury and contextual elegance.”

For IHCL, the move comes at a time when post-pandemic travel demand is shifting sharply toward regional hubs. Cities like Lucknow, Bhubaneswar, and Indore are seeing a steady pipeline of five-star developments, driven by improved connectivity, corporate expansion, and government-backed infrastructure growth.
With this expansion, the Taj Mahal Hotel Lucknow is not only strengthening IHCL’s footprint in Uttar Pradesh but also reinforcing a broader trend: luxury hospitality players are no longer limiting their bets to metros — they’re banking on heritage-rich second cities as the next growth frontier.
