NCPOR Marks Silver Jubilee with Special Commemorative Stamp on Antarctica Day

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Sada, Goa, marked its Silver Jubilee with the release of a special commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of Antarctica Day. The ceremony took place at the Prithvi Auditorium on the NCPOR campus and drew the presence of distinguished dignitaries and members of the scientific community.

  The Hon’ble Governor of Goa, Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, presided over the event as Chief Guest. Also in attendance were Shri Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra and Goa Circle; Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director of NCPOR; Shri Shailendra Saini, Group Director, NCPOR; and Shri Ramesh Patil, Director Postal Services, Goa Region.

  The program opened with a welcome address by Dr. Thamban Meloth, who reflected on NCPOR’s 25-year journey marked by significant contributions to polar and ocean research. He emphasised the institution’s role in advancing India’s scientific presence in the polar regions. Shri Amitabh Singh, in his remarks, congratulated NCPOR on reaching its Silver Jubilee and expressed pride in releasing the commemorative stamp in honour of both NCPOR’s achievements and Antarctica Day.

  The highlight of the event was the formal release of the Commemorative Postage Stamp by the Hon’ble Governor and the Chief Postmaster General. This was followed by the unveiling of a series of picture postcards themed on Antarctica, along with a First Day Cover dedicated to NCPOR.

  Addressing the gathering, the Governor commended NCPOR’s pioneering scientific work and noted that the organisation’s research continues to contribute valuable insights into polar science. He also underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between India Post and NCPOR in documenting and celebrating India’s scientific endeavours.

  The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem. A philatelic counter set up outside the auditorium attracted attendees, offering newly released philatelic material related to NCPOR and Antarctica Day. These items will also be available for sale at the Philatelic Bureau at the Panaji Head Post Office starting today.
