The Mumbai civic body on Tuesday sized two helicopters of a private airline company for defaulting on paying the property tax worth over Rs 1.64 crore, officials said.
The helicopters of the Mesco Airlines were seized from the Juhu Aerodrome here, they said.
BMC’s assistant commissioner Sangeeta Hasnaale said BMC had given a 21 day notice to the people from who they had to collect property tax. It was clearly written in the notice that if the tax is paid on time no action will be taken. But the property owner didn’t pay his tax so after the 21 day period they started their case against the property owner. As the helicopters cannot be moved so they were decided to be sealed at the site itself a Municipal officer said. On the other hand the BMC disconnected the water supply of a commercial building in Kalina, The Wadhwa trade centre as they owed the BMC ₹13.3 crores and out of that only 2 crores has been paid . An official said the water supply will be restored after the remaining anount will be paid. The BMC tax collection for the year is ₹5,000 crores and only ₹3,152 crores has been collected. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ramesh Pawar said that  if the defaulters keep on evading tax paying they will make a top 10 defaulters list and publish in the newspapers
