Maharashtra Governor meets Finnish Parliamentarian

The State Govt. will collaborate to strengthen relations between Maharashtra and Finland: Governor B.S. Koshyari

Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari welcomed visiting Parliamentarians from Finland at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai on 27th February, 2020. The Parliamentary Finance Committee was headed by Chairman Johannes Koskinen which consisted of 10 members of parliament. The Ambassador of Finland to India Ritva Koukku – Ronde and Honorary Consul of Finland in Mumbai Shreyas Doshi also accompanied the parliamentarian during their visit to Raj Bhavan. 

Finnish Parliamentarian committee Chairman Johannes Koskinen emphasized on various topic in cordial atmosphere. He discussed the similarities in parliamentary practices between India and Finland. Chairman Johannes Koskinen said “There are many leading Indian companies which are operating from Finland, these companies include Mahindra, TCS, Wipro and many more. The Indian Diaspora in the country is growing extensively which are beneficial for both countries”. 

He further stated that “Maharashtra is a front-runner State in economic and industrial development in Finland. He called for further strengthening cooperation between Maharashtra and Finland that will further enhance better relationships.  

The visiting Parliamentarian highlighted uniqueness of their country. They informed Governor that Finland is home to snow-capped Lapland region which is similar to the Himalayas. They suggested that Bollywood would find Finland an attractive destination for shooting films. 

Governor of Maharashtra K B Koshyari welcoming the Finnish delegation said “While strengthening cooperation in business, economy, clean energy and tourism, there is a need to promote cultural and educational exchanges between India and Finland. We are positive about strengthening further ties with Finland and would be having extensive dialogue on development, which would mutually benefit both the countries”. 

Indo Finland relations: It may be noted that Finland and India have traditionally enjoyed warm and friendly relations. In recent years, bilateral relations have acquired diversity with collaboration in research, innovation, and investments by both sides. The Indian community in Finland is vibrant and well-placed. Indian culture and yoga are very popular in Finland. 2019 marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

About Hannu Erkki Johannes Koskinen: Hannu Erkki Johannes Koskinen is a Finnish politician member of the Social Democratic Party of Finland. A lawyer by profession, he is a one of the senior most Member of Parliamentarian. He has been a member of the Parliament of Finland from Tavastia Proper since 1991. He served as the Minister of Justice during two Lipponen cabinets, Jäätteenmäki cabinet and first Vanhanen cabinet from April 1999 to March 2005. He was replaced as Minister of Justice by Leena Luhtanen in a cabinet reshuffle. He also served as one of the deputy speakers of the Parliament of Finland. 

 About Lapland: Lapland is the largest and northernmost region of Finland. The region was associated with Father Christmas or Saint Nicholas when first proposed by Finnish radio host Markus Rautio in 1927. Rovaniemi Airport is the third busiest airport in Finland and holidays to Lapland are common towards the end of the year. Cold and wintry climate Lapland is liked by tourists from across the globe. It is coupled with its relative abundance of conifer trees such as pines and spruces. Lapland has become associated with Christmas in some countries, most notably the United Kingdom.
