V Ponraj appointed as vice president of Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan inducted former President and scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s scientific adviser V Ponraj as the Vice President of his Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu assembly elections will be held in a single phase on April 6 and the counting of votes will take place on May 2.

Haasan also released the party’s agenda for women and youth welfare and sports development.

The actor politician’s party promises to give dignity and recognition to homemakers and has stated that household work will be monetised.

Every uniformed service in the state should have 50 % representation for women and hostels in every district will provide free emergency overnight stay for women in distress and a follow-up system on complaints will be established with a helpline number.

If MNM comes to power, the government will procure and distribute sanitary napkins through PDS outlets for poor urban and rural adolescent girls and women.

On the youth development front, the MNM promises 50 lakh new jobs and states that guaranteed jobs will be made available within 100 square km from the pin code for any graduate. “Don’t seek work, work will seek you,” it says

There will also be special financial incentives for any youth employing more than five youths

On sports development, the MNM vows to give traditional village sports a fillip and jallikattu will be made a more humane international spectator sport.

“To foster discipline, time management, and fitness among people, MNM government will lead a fit Tamil Nadu movement, starting at schools, colleges, and homes,” the agenda states.

A world-class sports complex would be set up at every panchayat union to churn out Olympic and world champions from the state with public-private partnerships.

Special sports facilities will also be made available for disabled people.
