Chennai Air Customs seized gold worth Rs. 2.90 crore

Recovered smuggled gold by Chennai Air Customs

Based on specific full proof intelligence that gold was likely to be smuggled to Chennai from Dubai by concealing in aircraft. The Chennai air customs searched Air India flight AI-906 which arrived from Dubai was rummaged. On rummaging two heavy packets wrapped with white adhesive tapes were found concealed under one of the seat cushions of the aircraft.

The custom officials took possession of the packet for investigation. While cut opening the packet, 6 gold bars weighing 1 Kg each with foreign markings were found.  The marking on the gold biscuits were “SAM 1 KILO FINE GOLD 999.9”. The gold was totally weighing 6 kg. As per market valuation the gold was valued at Rs.2.90 crore. It was recovered and seized as unclaimed under Customs Act.

Further investigation is under progress.
