A native of Kolkata, Aviation industry old hand Sanjiv Kapoor will be joining the Oberoi Hotels & Resorts Group as President, effective from June 1; 2021.He is a former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Spice Jet. This was announced by Sanjiv Kapoor on his Twitter handle. He had last served as the Chief Strategy and Commercial Officer of Vistara – TATA SIA Airlines. He will refill the position that has been vacant since 2017 when former president Kapil Chopra exited the Oberoi Group.
Before joining Vistara, Kapoor was also the CEO of Bangladeshi carrier – GMG Airlines. Kapoor has also worked with US carrier Northwest Airlines. For Kapoor, who describes himself as an ‘aviation veteran’ in his social media profile, this shift from aviation to hospitality will surely be one to look forward to.
Sharing the news of his appointment, Kapoor mentioned in a post, “Am delighted to share that I will be joining the Oberoi Hotels & Resorts Group as President effective June 1, 2021. Sanjiv has over 20 years of experience in the airline industry, having worked with airlines in Asia, Europe, and the US as a part of management, as a management consultant, and as an investment advisor in the aviation space. He is recognized in India and the region as a thought leader in the industry and is a sought after speaker and panellist in various industry events and on college campuses, as well as input provider towards government policies.
Sanjiv started his airline career with Northwest Airlines in the US in 1997, where he worked in finance, planning, and procurement. In 2004 Sanjiv joined Bain and Company (in Singapore, and subsequently in Dallas and London) as a leader in their airline practice, working with global airline clients on projects ranging from strategy and performance improvement / turnaround, to network, alliances, and customer experience. Sanjiv’s previous employers include Temasek Holdings, Singapore (the owners of Singapore Airlines) and Oracle Corporation.
Educational Assets: Sanjiv is a resident of Kolkata in West Bengal, where he did his schooling from prestigious La Martiniere. He received his MBA in 1996 from Wharton (University of Pennsylvania). He also completed his BA in 1990 in Computer Science and Government from Dartmouth College. (Dartmouth College is a private Ivy League research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, United States. Established in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock, it is the ninth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.)
