businessman from Mumbai has allegedly received threatening extortion calls from Fahim Machmach — a top lieutenant of Chota Shakeel from the Dawood Ibrahim gang.

This could be the first such call after a long time when an offence has been registered by the Mumbai crime branch where names of D-gang members like Fahim Machmach and Chota Shakeel have been mentioned.

The businessman from Ghatkopar received the calls last week when the caller allegedly identified himself as Fahim Machmach and threatened the businessman with dire consequences if he failed to pay the demanded amount.

Initially, the businessman did not pay heed to the call but later when he received multiple calls, he approached the police.

A case is being investigated by the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Mumbai crime branch. Sources said AEC officials are trying to find out details of the caller, but the call couldn’t be traced as it was made using VOIP (Voice over internet protocol).

The voice of the caller allegedly did not match with the samples of Fahim Machmach initially, but it is being rechecked by officials again for a re-verification with the help of experts.

Sources said the call made to the businessman could be due to some business or personal dispute, which is also under probe by the AEC officials.
