An 11-year-old boy from Andheri West lost his left eye when sparks from a firecracker hit him while he was bursting some with his friends. The incident has also left him with serious injuries to his nose, for which he received six stitches. The boy was rushed to a local hospital immediately after the incident and later shifted to JJ Hospital where doctors performed multiple surgeries. The DN Nagar police are probing the incident.

The boy has been identified as Sai Anil Bharankar, a resident of Dhangar Wadi at Gilbert Hill Road, Andheri West. His mother told the police that he was standing at the corner of the road when his friends burst a firecracker that led to the incident. According to the police, the incident happened around 9 pm on Monday while Bharankar was playing with his friends outside his residence.

Speaking to mid-day, Bharankar’s mother Komal Bharankar said, “At 8 pm after having dinner he left home to burst firecrackers with his friends. While he was standing at a corner of the road, his friends burst a cracker, sparks from which hit him. This happened because the lane where they were bursting the crackers is too small. Some local people rushed him to a nearby hospital where they advised us to take him to JJ Hospital. Doctors there performed multiple surgeries but he lost an eye. He also received injuries on his nose. He is still undergoing treatment. He is not able to speak properly and the police are yet to record his statement.”

A police officer said, “We are investigating the matter and trying to find out how he received the injuries. We have not yet registered any complaint in the matter. After recording the boy’s statement, we will take action.”
