Cybercrooks con businessman of Rs 2 lakh

In yet another incident of online fraud, cyber fraudsters duped a 54-year-old businessman of Rs 2 lakh. A case in this regard has been lodged by the Goregaon police in Mumbai following a complaint by the victim.

According to the Goregaon police, the victim is a bio-medical equipment manufacturer. In his complaint, he stated that the cyber thieves, posing as staff members of a military hospital in Santacruz, conned him after placing a fake order of ECG machines purchase last month, The Times of India reported.

As per the complaint, the fraudster, who identified himself as Kuldeep Singh, called him and ordered a purchase of five ECG equipment. Later, another cybercrook identifying himself as Manjeet called the businessman. He asked the victim to transfer Rs 5 to his bank account before making the ECG purchase deal. When the victim made the transaction, he received an amount of Rs 10. Manjeet then asked the businessman to transfer Rs 80,000, promising him to get a Rs 79,995 refund. However, nothing was refunded.

“Claiming a technical error, the accused sent businessman two links, and asked him to click those to receive the money. The links were of a digital wallet. When the businessman did so, Rs 1.2 lakh got debited from his account,” the TOI quoted the police as saying.

The victim told police that for deliveries to be made to the government offices, he usually has to make a payment of 10 per cent of the tender amount for getting the order. He gets back the amount a year later.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to nab the culprits.

In a similar incident, cyber cheats managed to block the SIM card of a businessman and defrauded him of Rs 18.51 lakh. The 51-year-old businessman owns a private company in Andheri (W).

On December 17, police arrested one of the cheats Nurotam Biswas (36) from West Bengal and recovered a few lakh rupees from his possession. The hunt for the other accused is still underway.
