The Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), an upcoming sea bridge between Sewri and Nhava Sheva (JNPT), is likely to be ready by 2024-end. More than cutting travel time between south Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, it will be a boon for those heading from the metropolis for Pune and Goa.
MTHL is expected to mitigate traffic congestion in the island city and promote economic development in Navi Mumbai. The link will have interchanges at Sewri, Shivaji Nagar and Chirle.
Current route | (To Pune)
P D’Mello Road, Freeway, Sion-Panvel Expressway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway. (Onwards to Goa) NH48, NH748
Future route | (To Pune)
P D’Mello Road, Freeway (exit ahead of Sewri), MTHL, onto Mumbai-Pune Expressway via Chirle passing by under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport. (Onwards to Goa) NH48, NH748
Travel time
Travel times will similarly reduce by 90 minutes also between Mumbai and places like Lonavla and Khandala on the route to Pune and between Mumbai and destinations that lie on NH48
MTHL extension to beat congestion
Due to heavy traffic flow expected due to MTHL, congestion is expected to increase
Since existing roads in the Nhava Sheva area are narrow, vehicles getting off MTHL would take a 1.5km detour, which would take 45 minutes to negotiate during peak hours. Hence, a 6km extension to MTHL has been planned to overcome this.
