The newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Ethiopia to India, His Excellency Demeke Atanafu Ambulo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, arrived in New Delhi on 7 June 2023 from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, to assume his official position. Upon his arrival, he was warmly received at the New Delhi airport by Ambassador Bijunesh Meseret, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Ethiopian Embassy and other staff members of the Embassy.
His Excellency Demeke Atanafu is a well-known Diplomat in India for his humble nature with extraordinary knowledge on diplomacy and his name is taken with great respect in Indian business and industry circles. His Excellency is a very experienced and sharp diplomat, and has been working in the Ethiopian Foreign Service for almost three decades.
Prior to his new appointment, HE Demeke was working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia. He has distinct experience of working in India for about eight years. He was posted in New Delhi for four years from 1998 to 2002 and was also posted as Consul General in Mumbai for about four years. During the Corona epidemic, he tried to take his country to every possible height in Mumbai and succeeded in that. In his tenure as CG in Mumbai, he inked several pacts in the Indian business community which has given a new dimension to Indo Ethiopia trade relations.
Speaking to Mumbai Messenger Newspaper, he said that he would focus on further strengthening relations between two countries. He sees immense possibilities in the areas of science and technology, economic, investment, cultural and tourism of both the countries. He wants to take the relationship between two countries to great heights.
It may be noted that Bilateral trade between Ethiopia and India stood at USD 1.8 billion 2023, with India being the second largest trading partner. There are over 586 Indian companies operating in Ethiopia and over 55,000 people of Indian origin with licensed investments of over US$ 4 billion. In addition, the Indian community has a large presence in the educational sector with an estimated 2000-2500 Indian lecturers/professors working in more than 40 public universities and higher education institutions, and the Indian diaspora is estimated to be between 5000-6000.
