The Sri Lankan cabinet has approved the issuance of complimentary tourist visas to visitors from seven countries: China, India, Russia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This initiative is aimed at bolstering the country’s tourism sector and contributing to its economic recovery.

Under a pilot program effective until March 31, 2024, tourists from these countries will be entitled to receive free visas. This is part of Sri Lanka’s efforts to stimulate the rebound of its tourism industry and achieve five million tourist arrivals by 2026.

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector suffered a severe blow due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent financial crisis in 2022. However, the industry has shown signs of recovery in 2023, with over a million tourist arrivals recorded by September.

India is the largest source of tourists to Sri Lanka, followed by Russia. In the first eight months of 2023, Sri Lanka’s tourism industry generated revenues of $1.3 billion, a significant increase from the previous year.

The Consul General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, His Excellency Dr. Valsan Vethody speaking to Mumbai Messenger said “We are already witnessing an encouraging surge in tourism, especially from India. This move on the part of the Government will further boost tourists from India including a significant influx during long weekends, especially from the young professionals. This decision is expected to further diversify the tourism landscape of Sri Lanka, especially with the ease of travel from the cities offering direct flights to Sri Lanka such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Chennai, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, and Tiruchirappalli”.

CG Dr. Valsan added “I appreciate this positive gesture of our government towards fostering stronger people-to-people connections. I believe that these interactions will not only enhance the bi-lateral ties between India and Sri Lanka but also lead to a deeper understanding of the similarities between the culture, heritage, and way of life. I extend a warm welcome to all the tourists, to explore our diverse landscapes, rich history, beach trails, casino trail, abundant wildlife and vibrant culture.”
