Jamaica Tourism: Exclusive Interview with Director of Tourism Donovan White

Donovan White is a strategist, a solution-driven leader and business leader. He is responsible for promoting and enhancing Jamaica’s reputation as the premier destination in the global market. He is pursuing an aggressive and robust marketing agenda with a keen focus on technology, all with a view to exceeding major growth goals. He is keen on leveraging existing industry relationships with investors, hoteliers, visitors and key stakeholders to help the JTB embrace the new global paradigm shifts in tourism, concurrently expanding the destination’s global reach. Donovan White,Director of Tourism of Jamaica shared a detailed outlook of favourite destination with Journalist Mewati Sitaram.  

  • Could you share insights into how Jamaica’s tourism sector has evolved over the past few years and what key strategies are being implemented to attract international tourists, particularly from India?

Jamaica’s tourism sector has been on a growth trajectory since the country became an independent nation. Currently, Jamaica is expected to add 2,000 new rooms to the hotel industry with the debuts of the first 1,000 rooms of the 2,000-room Princess Grand Jamaica, the 753-room Riu Palace Aquarelle and the 450-room Unico Hotel in Montego Bay. Jamaica has also upgraded two of the three international airports with new retail and dining outlets, introduced an online C5 customs form for all arriving air passengers and is installing Automated Passport Control kiosks, all designed to improve the airport experience. Jamaica welcomed more than 4 million visitors in 2023, earned US4.2 billion and continues to be one of the most popular destinations in the world. 

  • What makes Jamaica a unique destination for Indian tourists compared to other Caribbean islands?

 Jamaica is one of the most aspirational travel destinations for the Indian travellers. Be it families, honeymooners, leisure travellers or adventure seekers, Jamaica is a unique destination for the Indian travellers to discover.   • How is Jamaica catering to the specific preferences and needs of Indian tourists, in terms of cuisine, cultural experiences, or wedding tourism?

 There is a strong presence of Indian culture in Jamaica. What really makes Jamaica unique is the gorgeous, rich culture of those who live here. The island destination has many tourism products to offer to Indians, with multiple similarities to the Indian culture like traditional music, cuisine and other cultural components. Jamaica’s tropical climate makes it an ideal destination for the Indian travellers and Indian cuisines has been adapted into Jamaica’s culture.

There have been a lot of Indian weddings in Jamaica, however, these have originated from the Indian diaspora residing in the US, the UK, Canada and other areas in the vicinity. Jamaica has the capability to cater to Indian weddings, be it music, cuisine, décor and any other specific requirement.

The island is open to looking at Indian Bollywood celebrities and influencers to promote the island destination. Jamaica and India have years of cooperation and there are many opportunities to promote our culture.
