First, the scorching heat and now the drowning.
Health ministry data indicates from 1st March to 18th June in the same year alone, over 110 people in India lost their life due to scorching heat and over 40,000 suspected cases of heat stroke alone over the past three and half months.
Is this not enough to believe that we are amidst of a crucial climate crisis?
If not then let’s continue.
Since the monsoon season has come knocking on the door, citizens were keen to believe that the rain would provide a sense of relief from the fierce heat and so it did but it also brought to our doorstep much worse seasonal disastrous events.
The National Capital, Delhi has been a witness of these horrifying incidents. From sinking holes to, damaged infrastructures, Delhi has witnessed it all.
Various areas of Delhi has been experiencing water-logging which has left residents of Delhi frustrated. The visuals of the water-logging were seen on X where people expressed their frustration over the situation of the road. Endless traffic has also been captured in a X post.
“It has been raining continuously in Delhi for the last three hours” wrote an individual who shared a video that shows rain entering their house.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) shared in a X post “Thunderstorm with light moderate intensity rain with heavy intensity rain over few places and winds with speed of 20-40 km/h would occur over adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR during the next two hours”
Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi Terminal 1 experienced a collapse of the Roof where one was reported to undergo a death and 5 reported to experience injuries.
The portion of the roof was addressed to experience collapse due to heavy rains on the morning of 28 June.
Mr. Ram Mohan Naidu, The Civil Aviation minister was addressed to arrive at the location to personally monitor the roof collapse.
Passengers with cancelled flights are promised for completed refunds.
“Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed around 5am. There are injuries reported and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those
affected.” A Delhi International Airpot Limited (DIAL) spokesperson said. He added that all departures from Terminal 1 are temporarily suspended and check in counters are also closed as a safety measure.
