The ever-vigilant officers of Mumbai Air Customs successfully thwarted another gold smuggling attempt at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on November 11, 2024. Based on their sharp profiling skills, customs officials intercepted a passenger arriving from Dubai, leading to the seizure of three 24 KT gold bars, each weighing one kilogram.
The gold bars, valued at approximately Rs. 2.27 crore, were concealed in the pocket of the passenger’s trousers. The authorities swiftly acted and arrested the passenger under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, for attempting to smuggle gold into India without declaring it.
This successful interception is another example of the effectiveness of Mumbai Airport’s customs officials in curbing illegal activities and safeguarding the nation’s economy from such illicit operations.
A senior Customs official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, remarked, “We have a robust network of informers who keep us constantly updated on potential smuggling activities. Our officers maintain 24/7 vigilance at the airport, often in plain clothes, and we meticulously monitor passenger movements via CCTV to detect any suspicious behaviour. We ensure that no smuggling attempt goes unnoticed under the watchful eyes of our dedicated Customs team.”
