In a series of events showcasing India’s rich cultural and postal heritage, Ms. Vandita Kaul, Secretary (Posts), Ministry of Communications, unveiled several significant initiatives during her visit to Mumbai.
At the iconic General Post Office building at Fort in Mumbai, Ms. Kaul launched a special set of postcards themed around the Penguins of Antarctica. These cards will embark on a remarkable journey as part of the 44th Indian Antarctic expedition, traveling from the Bharati Branch Post Office and Maitri Post Office in Antarctica to Mumbai.
This event underscores India’s global postal reach and its commitment to exploring the frontiers of philately. The launch was attended virtually by the Director of the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) and officials from the Antarctica-based post offices. In a tribute to the Mahabaleshwar Strawberry’s Geographical Indication (GI) status, Ms. Kaul also released a permanent pictorial cancellation featuring the iconic strawberry. This release took place at the Mahabaleshwar Post Office, Pune, highlighting the cultural and agricultural heritage of the region.
At the historic Mumbai General Post Office (GPO), Ms. Kaul reviewed the ongoing conservation and renovation efforts of the iconic building.
Speaking to Mumbai Messenger Ms. Kaul said “India Post has numerous services which are meant to serve people that includes Passport Seva Kendra, India Post Payment Bank and Postal Life Insurance. For more than 150 years, the Department of Posts (DoP) has been the backbone of the country’s communication and has played a crucial role in the country’s social economic development”.
