To observe the United Nations-designated World Meditation Day on December 21, 2024, the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, organized two special meditation sessions in Colombo and Ratnapura. These sessions offered participants an opportunity to improve their mental and physical well-being through meditation.
The first session was held at the Mayurapathy Meditation Hall in Colombo, while the second took place at Jethvanarama Buddhist Monastery, Kalatuwawa, Ratnapura. Both events were well-attended and praised for their calming and transformative effects.
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on December 6, 2024, A/79/L. 27, declaring December 21 as World Meditation Day. Supported by India and Sri Lanka, this resolution highlights the benefits of meditation on mental and physical health and underscores its connection to yoga in promoting holistic well-being. December 21, the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, symbolizes a time for introspection, making it an ideal occasion for reflection and meditation.
