In a major breakthrough against international drug smuggling, Customs officers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai, successfully intercepted five passengers arriving from Bangkok on December 25-26, 2024. Based on specific intelligence and spot profiling, the officers uncovered a total of 26.481 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed (marijuana), concealed in a sophisticated manner.

The narcotic substances were hidden in double-layered silver-colored plastic packets, which were then concealed within various common items such as packets of chips, washing powder, diapers, and instant noodles, all packed inside trolley bags. The illicit market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be ₹26.48 crore.

All five passengers involved in the smuggling attempt were arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

A Significant Victory in the Fight Against Drug Smuggling: This operation is part of an ongoing series of targeted actions conducted by Mumbai Customs officers at CSMIA. Over the past three months alone, Customs officers have intercepted and seized a staggering 115.5 kg of hydroponic ganja (marijuana) in similar operations. The cumulative illicit market value of these seizures is approximately ₹115.5 crore.

The proactive and strategic profiling by Customs officers, in coordination with specific intelligence received, has been pivotal in dismantling smuggling attempts and disrupting illegal narcotic networks that attempt to exploit the busy environment of CSMIA.

Strengthening Vigilance Against Narcotics Smuggling: The successful seizures and arrests underscore the unwavering vigilance of Mumbai Customs officers, who continue to work relentlessly to prevent the entry of illegal substances into India. These operations are also in line with the Government of India’s ongoing Nasha Mukth Bharat (Drug-Free India) campaign, which aims to curb the menace of drug abuse and trafficking across the nation.

Mumbai Customs, in its ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling, remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the public by dismantling international drug trade networks and upholding the integrity of India’s borders.
