In yet another attempt to smuggle gold into the country, officials of the Airport Commissionerate, Mumbai Customs Zone-III, foiled a smuggling bid and seized 24 karat gold dust concealed inside a passenger’s body cavity. The incident took place on August 25, 2025.
According to a press note issued by Customs on August 26, officers intercepted a passenger who had arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) from Jeddah. On the basis of profiling and suspicious behavior, the individual was subjected to a detailed examination.
Upon inspection, officials recovered four pieces of gold dust in wax, weighing a total of 1.07 kg (net weight 1075 grams), valued at approximately ₹1.02 crore. The gold was ingeniously concealed within the passenger’s body cavity to evade detection.
The individual was arrested under relevant provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation into the case is underway.
Customs officials continue to maintain strict vigilance at Mumbai Airport to crack down on gold smuggling operations, which have seen a steady rise in recent months.
