Lonavala, known for its hills and weekend getaways, made headlines recently for an extraordinary reason. Twenty-four students and two teachers from Sampark Orphanage and Lily English Medium School in Bhaje travelled to Belarus in August, invited personally by the President of Belarus. The fully funded trip gave these children, many of whom had never flown abroad, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
During the 11-day visit, the group stayed at the National Children’s Centre ‘Zubrenok,’ where they immersed themselves in Belarusian culture, cuisine, nature, and hospitality. They toured Minsk, visited World War II memorials, explored the medieval Mir Castle, and participated in exchange activities with Belarusian children, including health programs and excursions. Translators from Belarusian State University ensured smooth communication.
Fifteen-year-old Anjali said, “This is the best trip of my life. Belarus amazed me with its beauty and friendly people. I will tell my friends in India all about it.”
Aliaksandr Matsukou, Consul General of Belarus in Mumbai, commented, “We are delighted to welcome these young visitors from India. Initiatives like this strengthen cultural ties and provide children with experiences that broaden their horizons and understanding of the world.”
