Historic heritage sites across India are more than reminders of the past—they have the potential to become major hubs for tourism and local economic growth. Experts say that with better facilities and proper management, these sites can attract a significantly larger number of visitors, benefiting both the community and the tourism sector.

Under the Smart City Mission, cities are being developed into heritage-friendly smart zones, combining preservation with modern amenities. This includes clean drinking water, food stalls, secure parking, well-maintained approach roads, clear signage, and digital information boards to guide tourists. With such improvements, visitors can enjoy a safe, comfortable, and enriching experience.

For example, Jaipur’s Johari Bazaar, already famous for its pink-hued architecture, can be enhanced with traditional street lighting, decorative benches, and gateway arches to make it an even bigger attraction. Similarly, the ghats and temples of Varanasi can benefit from cleanliness drives, digital information centers, meditation zones, and ambient night-time lighting, offering a memorable experience for both domestic and international tourists.

Rajendra Chopra, a renowned businessman and social worker, emphasizes, “If heritage sites are properly maintained and accessible, tourism will increase, benefiting local businesses, artisans, and the economy. Local authorities need to take initiative so these improvements serve everyone.”

Smart facilities at heritage sites not only enhance visitor experiences but also boost hotels, taxi services, handicrafts, and local markets. By combining tradition with modern infrastructure, cities can preserve their cultural identity while driving economic growth and tourism to new heights.
