AIAI, WTC Mumbai Facilitate Sri Lanka Business Delegation to Boost Bilateral Trade

Mumbai: The All India Association of Industries, in association with the World Trade Center Mumbai, hosted a business delegation from Sri Lanka aimed at strengthening bilateral trade, investment cooperation and industry partnerships between the two countries. The programme reflected the growing momentum in India–Sri Lanka economic relations and explored new opportunities for collaboration across diverse sectors.

  The interaction focused on enhancing commercial engagement in textiles and apparel, handicrafts, lifestyle and wellness products, infrastructure, tourism and information technology services. More than 300 B2B meetings were facilitated between Indian and Sri Lankan companies, providing a platform for direct business discussions, market access exploration and supply chain integration.

  Ms. Shirani Ariyarathne, Consul (Commercial), Consulate General of Sri Lanka, said that India and Sri Lanka share a deep-rooted relationship supported by a Free Trade Agreement in goods. She noted that efforts are underway to expand cooperation through a Free Trade Agreement in services, which would further strengthen economic integration. Highlighting opportunities in tourism, textiles, automobiles, infrastructure and IT, she said Sri Lanka’s preferential market access and expanding industrial zones offer strong prospects for Indian businesses.

  Dr. Vijay Kalantri, Chairman and President of AIAI and Chairman of World Trade Center Mumbai, said bilateral merchandise trade between the two countries had crossed USD 6 billion in FY 2024–25 and is expected to double over the next five years. He pointed out that nearly 4,000 products enjoy tariff concessions, creating scope to diversify trade beyond traditional sectors. He added that India remains one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Sri Lanka, reflecting sustained business confidence.

  Mrs. Mangala Madhuwanthi of the Export Development Board Sri Lanka said Sri Lanka’s exports exceeded USD 17.3 billion last year, contributing nearly 19 per cent to GDP, and noted that the visiting delegation showcased the country’s diverse export strengths.

  The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Capt. Somesh Batra, Vice Chairman, World Trade Center Mumbai, who underlined the importance of such engagements in strengthening economic ties between India and Sri Lanka.
