The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), India’s largest hospitality company, has announced a new milestone in its international expansion with the signing of a Taj hotel in Weligama, Sri Lanka. The greenfield development will feature 220 keys, including 80 luxury apartments, further strengthening IHCL’s footprint in the region.
Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and CEO of IHCL, said, “Weligama is shaping into one of Sri Lanka’s prominent coastal destinations, supported by the rise of surfing, wellness and nature-led travel. With tourism gaining steady momentum in the country, this development strengthens the Taj brand’s presence in the region. We are pleased to partner with Beryll Group for this project.”
Located in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, the beachfront Taj Weligama will offer sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. The resort will feature an all-day dining restaurant, two specialty restaurants, a beach bar and grill, a bar and lounge, and a deli. Guests can also enjoy Taj’s signature J Wellness Circle, a kids’ playroom, entertainment zone, state-of-the-art gym, and a swimming pool. The property will cater to meetings and events with over 9,000 sq. ft. of banquet and convention facilities, additional meeting rooms, and exclusive lawns.
Vishal Agarwal, Director, Beryll Group, said, “Weligama represents a destination with enduring global appeal. Partnering with IHCL and Taj allows us to develop a thoughtfully designed coastal resort that aligns with the region’s natural character while meeting international luxury standards. This reflects our long-term commitment to Sri Lanka and to creating high-quality hospitality assets with global partners.”
Known for its crescent-shaped bay, surf-friendly waters, and laid-back coastal ambience, Weligama is emerging as a top choice for both international and regional travellers, making it an ideal location for Taj’s next luxury offering.
