The post of Secretary in State Election Commission was lying vacant since November 29, 2022, after the tenure of Kiran Kurundkar ended.
Kakani is a seasoned bureaucrat from Maharashtra and known for handling Covid -19 situation when he was appointed as additional Municipal Commissioner in Mumbai. During his tenure in BMC during pandemic time, he created state of the art infrastructure in BMC and private hospitals in Mumbai.
Suresh Kakani speaking to Mumbai Tarang said I am very happy for this new assignment as it’s very challenging. In the past, I have worked in various fields of state government and BMC and this would be a new area for me where I get to understand nuances of the election commission. In a short span of time many elections are due in Village Panchayat, Panchayat Samitis, Zilla Parishads in rural areas and Municipal Councils and Municipal corporations in urban areas. We have to gear up speedily in a time bound manner for a smooth electioneering process.
Suresh Kakani has also published his memoir of Mumbai’s battle with Covid, a 190-page book, called Mumbai Fights Back, documents the BMC’s journey from 2020 to 2022. The book, inaugurated by actor Amitabh Bachchan, chronicles BMC’s journey through the first, second, and third wave of the pandemic.
