India’s development cooperation initiatives with Sri Lanka are centered around addressing the needs of the people while aligning with the priorities of the Sri Lankan government. These efforts are making a tangible difference in the daily lives of citizens across all 25 districts of the country. The cooperation spans several key sectors such as housing, health, education, fisheries, transport, renewable energy, agriculture, and livelihood sustenance, among others. India’s commitment to improving Sri Lanka’s social infrastructure is clearly reflected in these wide-ranging initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the people.

On 15 January 2025, a significant milestone in these efforts was achieved with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the supply of single cabs to Sri Lanka’s police stations. The MoU, with grant assistance of SLR 300 million from the Government of India, was exchanged by India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, H.E. Santosh Jha, and Sri Lanka’s Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. D.W.R.B. Seneviratne. The ceremony was attended by key figures, including Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya, Acting Inspector General of Police, and senior officials from Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Public Security, Police, and Ministry of Finance.

This initiative is part of India’s broader development assistance program and is focused on enhancing the operational capacity of the Sri Lankan Police, particularly in the Northern Province. The project includes the supply of at least 80 single cabs, spare parts, and accessories to police stations, addressing an important requirement of the police force. This provision will enable better law enforcement, improve public safety, and assist in maintaining law and order across the region.

The project marks a significant step in strengthening the ongoing India-Sri Lanka partnership. By supporting the Sri Lankan Police with essential equipment, India is contributing to the nation’s security and reinforcing the vital role of law enforcement in maintaining a safe and orderly society. This collaboration is an example of India’s continued commitment to helping Sri Lanka meet its growing challenges while fostering strong bilateral ties.
