The Governor of Maharashtra, C. P. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the State-level Fire Service Week at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, on the occasion of National Fire Service Day. The Governor also presented the President’s Fire Service Medals for Meritorious Service to eight distinguished fire service personnel from across the State.
The awardees included:Ravindra Ambulgekar, Chief Fire Officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Deepak Ghosh, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Sunil Gaikawad, Sub Officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Parag Dalvi, Leading Fireman, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Tatu Parab, Fireman, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Karim Khan Pathan, Fire Engine Driver, Pune Municipal Corporation, Kasappa Mane, Fireman, Sangli–Miraj–Kupwad City Municipal Corporation and Narsinha Patel, Ambulance Attendant (Fire), Pune Municipal Corporation.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Radhakrishnan emphasized the growing complexity of emergencies due to rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, and vertical expansion of cities. He stressed the importance of involving the private sector in fire preparedness and called for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and other advanced technologies in fire prevention, detection, and response.
“For cities like Mumbai, it is crucial that housing societies take proactive steps toward fire safety. Regular fire audits must be made mandatory for both residential and industrial establishments,” the Governor said. He also proposed the establishment of a dedicated fire science research institute in Maharashtra to advance research, develop eco-friendly fire suppressants, and strengthen training and infrastructure.
Highlighting the value of experience, the Governor recommended involving retired fire officers in industrial safety initiatives and emergency planning. He further encouraged universities and colleges to introduce short-term fire safety and disaster response programmes, and to actively engage students in drills and awareness campaigns.
On the occasion, Governor Radhakrishnan also inaugurated the Fund Collection Drive for the Maharashtra Fire Services Personnel Welfare Association, appealing to citizens to contribute generously to support the welfare of fire service personnel and their families.
