The arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai brings with it a wave of joy, scenic beauty, and nostalgic moments. From rain-soaked streets to the rhythmic pitter-patter of droplets, Mumbaikars find themselves immersed in a season celebrated in films and songs. However, beneath this romantic veneer lies a darker reality—an increase in seasonal diseases that can pose serious health risks if not managed carefully.

Dr Shivraj Pataria, a respected health expert and head of the 24×7 Pataria Superspeciality Hospital, highlights that monsoon-related illnesses, though common, can be effectively prevented. He points out that the seasonal surge in infections is often triggered by waterlogging, poor sanitation, and excessive humidity—conditions that allow harmful bacteria, viruses, and mosquitoes to thrive during the rains.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya see a significant rise during this season due to stagnant water in open areas. Equally concerning are waterborne diseases like typhoid, cholera, jaundice, gastroenteritis, and leptospirosis, which are often linked to contaminated water supplies and unhygienic conditions. Airborne infections including the common cold and flu, along with skin problems like fungal infections, eczema, and abscesses, are also prevalent due to increased moisture and sweating. Furthermore, consuming street food and drinking untreated water can result in serious stomach infections.

Dr Pataria suggests that simple preventive measures can help avoid these seasonal health issues. Boiling water before drinking, maintaining personal and household hygiene, using mosquito repellents, and eliminating breeding grounds such as puddles or stagnant water around homes are essential steps. He also strongly advises people to avoid eating from roadside vendors and unhygienic food stalls during this time. Importantly, any signs of illness should not be ignored and must be brought to the attention of a medical professional for timely diagnosis and treatment.

We at Pataria Superspeciality Hospital are fully equipped with advanced diagnostic machines and a panel of experienced specialist doctors to assist you with all your health-related queries and treatment needs. Our aim is to provide comprehensive care under one roof, ensuring patients receive timely guidance and expert medical attention without delays.

While the monsoon continues to drench the city with its charm, Dr Pataria reminds residents that a little caution can go a long way in ensuring that this season remains memorable for the right reasons.
