The Sixth Maharashtra State Finance Commission, headed by former Chief Secretary Dr Nitin Kareer, presented its report to Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat at Maharashtra Lok Bhavan on Wednesday. The submission marks a key step in the state’s efforts to strengthen fiscal governance and enhance financial support for local bodies across Maharashtra.
The Commission, tasked with reviewing the allocation of financial resources to Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies, included members Dr K H Govinda Raj, Eknath Dawale, Prof S Chandrasekhar, and Member Secretary Shanmugarajan S. During the meeting, the members highlighted the methodology adopted for evaluating the financial needs of local governance structures and the criteria for equitable fund distribution.
The recommendations focus on improving resource flow to both rural and urban local bodies, ensuring effective utilization of funds, and promoting transparency and accountability in local governance. The Commission emphasized the importance of strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions to drive grassroots development and empower communities while enabling Urban Local Bodies to manage urban infrastructure and civic services efficiently.
Governor Acharya Devvrat appreciated the Commission’s comprehensive analysis and its effort to balance fiscal prudence with the developmental needs of local governments. The report is expected to serve as a guiding framework for policy-making and budget allocation, contributing to sustainable governance and enhanced public service delivery across Maharashtra.
