The night sky over Chiayi County shimmered with colors as the 2026 Taiwan Lantern Festival opened this week, welcoming visitors from across the globe to a dazzling celebration of culture, technology, and sustainability. At 7:00 p.m., the festival’s main lantern, “Alishan, Veiled in Luminous Mist,” was illuminated by Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, casting a magical glow over the cheering crowd.
Returning to Chiayi after eight years, the festival transformed the city into a luminous wonderland, blending the region’s lush landscapes, forests, and agricultural heritage with innovative light displays and interactive installations. Over 600 lanterns and two major exhibition zones invited guests to embark on a journey through Chiayi’s past, present, and future. “Tracing the Light of the Deer” celebrated Indigenous traditions and harmony with nature, while “Harvest Jubilee” highlighted the Chianan Irrigation Canal’s role in sustaining the region’s agricultural bounty.
President Lai reflected on the festival’s deeper meaning, saying culture lays the foundation while technology drives progress. Each lantern installation echoed Taiwan’s commitment to sustainability, with recycled materials and eco-friendly designs integrated into the artistic displays. The main lantern, inspired by the sacred trees of Alishan, was accompanied by an immersive audiovisual performance that told the story of Chiayi’s natural beauty and Taiwan’s dedication to innovation.
Adding whimsy to the festival, visitors received the handheld lantern “OhBear Arrives in Chiayi,” symbolising joy, travel, and the excitement of arrival. This year also marked the return of the TECH WORLD Taiwan Pavilion from the Osaka World Expo, offering a glimpse of Taiwan’s technological prowess. The upcoming TEAM TAIWAN Parade promises international flair, featuring a giant lantern from Japan’s Aomori Nebuta Festival and performances by cultural troupes worldwide.
Under the theme “Illuminating Taiwan, Lighting Up Chiayi,” the festival invites travellers to explore a story told in light, culture, and innovation. From scenic landscapes to futuristic visions, it is a celebration that captures the heart of Taiwan and leaves every visitor spellbound.
