The newly constituted India–Argentina Parliamentary Friendship Group held its first meeting in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Chavan, with discussions centred on strengthening bilateral relations and identifying new avenues for trade, industry and economic cooperation.
The meeting marked an important step in building parliamentary engagement between the two countries. The Friendship Group was constituted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, with Chavan appointed as its chairman. Its broader objective is to promote dialogue between Indian and Argentine lawmakers and encourage cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
During the meeting, members discussed ways to deepen India–Argentina economic ties, with particular emphasis on trade and industry. Greater interaction between policymakers and the business community was seen as important for identifying practical opportunities for expanding commercial engagement.
The group also proposed greater engagement with Argentine diplomatic representatives and Indian industry bodies. Argentina’s Ambassador to India, Mariano Agustín Caucino, along with representatives of major Indian trade and industry organisations, is expected to be invited for a subsequent interaction to discuss opportunities for stronger economic partnerships.
The initiative comes as India and Argentina seek to expand cooperation beyond traditional areas and explore new opportunities in trade, investment, technology and other sectors. Parliamentary friendship groups can provide an institutional platform for lawmakers to exchange views, share experiences and support closer people-to-people and economic ties.
Chavan’s appointment assumes significance given his long political and administrative experience. The India–Argentina group is expected to use parliamentary diplomacy to complement wider government-to-government and business engagement between the two countries.
The Delhi meeting has therefore set the stage for sustained dialogue, with the group seeking to translate parliamentary interaction into greater economic and bilateral cooperation between India and Argentina.
